about North Northumberland...
So much to do! And not all of it is outdoors!
Let's start off with the indoor stuff. There are:
Castles at Norham, Alnwick, Etal, Chillingham, Bamburgh, Holy Island, Warkworth and Dunstanburgh - all within easy reach. There is an abbey at Dryburgh in Melrose, a old priory at Brinkburn near Morpeth and Cragside House at Rothbury. Country Houses at Mellerstain, Manderston, Paxton House and Wallington Hall are all worth a visit.
Museums and galleries can be found in Berwick and Alnwick and nearby Ford & Etal Estate has a visitor centre , restored and working water mill and miniature railway.
Moving outdoors...
For the sports enthusiast there is a swimming pool at Berwick and Alnwick, golf courses at Berwick, Goswick and Belford and (an albeit steep) course at Wooler. Fish in the river Till and Glen (licence required).
Then there is loads of walking to do... great coastal walks along often deserted sandy beaches and gentle walks in the rolling hills of the Cheviots. Walks with a purpose - follow routes to sites of archaeological interest - from Bronze Age to the time of Border warfare (between the English and the Scots).
Visit the local towns of Berwick with its intact Elizabethan Walls and fortifications or Alnwick with its castle in the town centre and now world famous new gardens. Look over the border and visit Kelso and Floors Castle - home of the Duke of Roxburgh. Go on a race day for a day at the races.
Take a day off and catch the train to Newcastle or Edinburgh from Berwick.
As we said there is a lot to see and do.

Milfield itself...
You're next door to the delightful Milfield Country Cafe which serves a great breakfast, hot meals throughout the day and all sorts of pastries and cakes. Across the road is the pub and opposite it the village shop and post office. There is a Methodist Chapel in the village .
There is a reconstruction of a stone age henge (full size) but this one is wooden (so was the original) and a Dark Age house - all at the Maelmin Heritage Trail.
